Education Outreach

Tuesday Musical Association has a deep commitment to education and one of the greatest tools it has available is the ability to provide connections between the artists appearing on the concert series and area students. There are several ways this can happen.

Master Classes

A master class is a class given to students of a particular discipline by an expert of that discipline—in our case, music. The difference between a normal class and a master class is typically the setup. In a master class, all the students (and often spectators) watch and listen as the master takes one student at a time. The student (typically intermediate or advanced, depending on the status of the master) usually performs a single piece which they have prepared, and the master will give them advice on how to play it, often including anecdotes about the composer, demonstrations of how to play certain passages, and admonitions of common technical errors. The student is then usually expected to play the piece again, in light of the master's comments, and the student may be asked to play a passage repeatedly to attain perfection.

Normally, an artist will work with three or four students and the class lasts approximately two hours. These master classes are held at various venues, from university recital halls to library auditoriums. The master classes are attended by other students and the public is always welcome.

Lectures & Demonstrations

The lecture/demonstration is more informal, but greatly enjoyed by the students. There will be a short performance with time for a Q&A session with the students. This can be either an intimate or large group of students.

Sometimes, time allows only an open rehearsal which is exceedingly well received by the students able to attend.

Residencies

Today, there is great appeal for the multi-day residency experience where the artist(s) spends a few days in town prior to the performance and works with as many students/ensembles as possible. Often, a multi-day residency also permits the artist(s) to reach even further into the community and visit residents living in senior citizen complexes.

Transportation

Tuesday Musical will also cover the cost of bus transportation for schools bringing more than 20 students to any of the education outreach opportunities it offers. This must be coordinated through the Tuesday Musical office, 330.972.2342.
